A good Showdown run usually starts before anyone sees a pitch. The draft matters, and it matters a lot. If you're saving resources for roster work outside the mode, MLB 26 Stubs can be part of that bigger Diamond Dynasty grind, but inside this challenge you've got to squeeze value from every pick. Taking 90 Overall Juan Soto early is the kind of choice that changes the whole mood of the run. His bat plays against righties, and that 109 power gives you a real answer when the game starts asking for crooked numbers. From there, the goal isn't to build a cute lineup. You need hitters who can survive heat, handle breaking stuff, and punish anything left middle-in.
Drafting for the Fight Ahead
People get tempted by name value, but this Showdown rewards balance more than flash. An 88 Overall squad with strong contact and enough pop gives you a better chance to keep innings moving. I'd rather have three steady bats than one star surrounded by weak swings. Left-handed hitters are especially useful because Jacob deGrom's stuff can feel a little less nasty when you're not giving him the same look every at-bat. Corey Seager and Brandon Nimmo fit that idea well. They don't need to do too much. Line drives, gap shots, long counts. That's the job.
Facing deGrom on Hall of Fame
The big wall is the last matchup. You're staring at Milestone Jacob deGrom on Hall of Fame difficulty, down 34 to 48, with 27 outs to work with. It sounds ridiculous because it is. There's no room for lazy swings or panic hacks. His fastball jumps, his off-speed can make you look silly, and if your PCI is late by a hair, you'll probably roll over something weak. The first few at-bats set the tone. A perfect-perfect swing with Soto to cut the score to 35 to 48 doesn't just add a run. It tells you the comeback is actually possible.
Making Every Out Feel Expensive
You can't beat this version of deGrom by swinging at everything near the zone. That's where a lot of runs die. The better approach is annoying but effective: take close pitches, foul off tough ones, and make him work. Once his pitch count climbs past 70, the game starts to feel different. He misses spots. The fastball still touches 101 mph, sure, but it won't always live on the black. That's when you attack. A 100 mph heater driven into the gap can do more than score one runner. It keeps the pressure on and keeps you from feeling like every swing has to be a homer.
Keeping Calm When the Run Is There
The strangest part comes after you tie it. Getting from 34 to 48 feels impossible, then suddenly the score is 48 to 48 and there are still outs left. That's when players tighten up. Five outs remain, deGrom is tired, and yet one bad chase can ruin the whole thing. Stay boring. Sit on one pitch, one area, and don't let the speed scare you into guessing wildly. Whether you grind the mode for cards, rewards, or because you're looking to buy MLB The Show Stubs for the wider team-building chase, beating this Showdown comes down to the same thing: patient at-bats, clean PCI work, and trusting the lefty bats that got you there.
